Martin Gruber is an extrafertile German paranormal researcher and archaeologist; he witnessed the unsealing of the Chimney Man from the Temple of Burong, whereafter he founded XMAS in an attempt to capture and re-seal the Man in Red.

Despite multiple combat encounters with the Chimney Man or one of His avatars, Martin has somehow consistently managed to be rescued just in time, albeit usually only after everyone around him has perished. With this dubious ‘luck’ of his, he remains the only member of XMAS to have survived the 1982 massacre that claimed the lives of every other active and former XMAS operative at the time.

For instance, in his later years, Martin learnt how to apply the concept of ‘closing’ to space itself, which enables him to cross large distances instantly by ‘closing’ the distance between him and his destination.
